More success for club that keeps on winning

Yamakai Karate increased their medal haul for the year with events across the country.

Members have been involved in various events over the summer and won a total of 24 medals including eight golds.

First up for the club, who run classes at Stonelaw Sports Centre on Calderwood Road, was the Central England Open Championsh­ips in Worcester in July.

Silver medals went to Amy Luke in the senior female under 61k kumite with silver also going to the five person Yamakai team of Carl Muscat, Amy Luke, Calum MacDonald, Keir Fraser and Amy MacDonald. Bronze went to Iona MacDonald in the girls 9-10 years kumite.

In August the squad headed to Darlington for the North East Open Championsh­ips. Gold medals were won by Jack Johnston in the 12-13 years under 45k kumite, Emma Boyle in the senior female +68k kumite and the senior female team consisting of Emma Boyle, Amy Luke and Roxy Gerelyuk.

Silver went to Iona MacDonald in the girls 9-10 years kumite, Marc Macaulay in the senior male +84k kumite while the Yamakai cadet Male A team came third with bronze medals going to Roxy Gerelyuk, Amy Luke and Luke Miller.

August ended with the squad attending the local Wishaw Grand Prix with several members winning medals. Emma Boyle won gold in the senior female open kumite, Calum MacDonald in the junior male open kumite, Keir Fraser in the cadet male under 57k kumite and Louis Galasso in the cadet male +57k kumite. Silver medals went to Amy Luke in the senior female and Liam Carlin in the boys 12-13 years under 45k kumite. Bronze went to Leah Semple in the girls + 38k kumite and Isaac Eddleston +45k kumite.

Seven members travelled to Basel in Switzerlan­d for the annual Basel Open Masters, returning with four awards. In the under 21 female kumite under 55k, gold went to Amy Luke with silver going to Keir Fraser in the cadet male under 52k kumite. Leah Semple took bronze in the under 12 girls open kumite section and Louis Galasso also won bronze in the cadet male 63k kumite section.

Yamakai have classes twice weekly in Rutherglen meeting in the Stonelaw Sports Centre Calderwood Road. The sessions are a mixture of Shotokan and competitio­n sport Karate. Beginners are accepted from five years and above.
