FIGHTING FIT AGAIN

Jordan’s on the hunt for 10th win as a professional

- Murray Spooner

Cambuslang boxer Jordan McCorry will enter the ring for the first time since March in search of the 10th win of his professional career.

The super- featherweight fighter takes on Sheffield’s Qasim Hussain at Bellahouton Sports Centre in front of a sold out crowd on October 1.

Jordan, 25, hopes the match-up on Saturday, which is being streamed live on BoxNation, a 24-hour dedicated boxing Pay television channel, will propel him towards another title fight later in the year.

The former Scottish champion has won nine and lost only two of his 12 bouts since turning pro’ in 2011, and has decided to drop down a weight class from Lightweight to the SuperFeatherweight division.

But in what could be a springboard to bigger bouts, Jordan believes he needs to win this weekend’s encounter.

“I’m feeling good. I’m really looking forward to it. The last time I fought was in March so I’ll be up for it.

“We’ve sold all the tickets and I’ve done all the training so now it’s all about the fight.

“It’s not the biggest fight of my career but it’s going to be on the television and will be watched by a lot of people.

“The preparation has went well, I’ll be training every day apart from Saturday and that’s been the same routine for a few months now.”

The former Trinity High School pupil who stays in Drumsagard, signed a deal with boxing promoters MGM Scotland earlier this year and reckons the decision to put pen to paper will give him more opportunities in the sport.

MGM, who have recently announced their boxing dinner show will be shown live on STV Glasgow and STV Edinburgh on October 13, provides a platform for upcoming Scottish boxers just like Jordan.

But the two-time Scottish Lightweight champion who trains weekly with boxing legend Peter Harrision at the Glasgow Phoenix gym, insists preparation has been the same throughout his time with the company.

“Not a lot has changed since signing with MGM, this will be my first fight with them. I’ve been in the gym and working with Peter and the training has been quite intense.

“Signing means it gives me more opportunities and if I win I hope to go for another world title soon.”
