Trio make club history
Members of Cambuslang Harriers had a very successful weekend at the West District Cross Country Relays and at the UK Masters over 40s Half Marathon Championship the following day.
At the event on Saturday, October 8, Cambuslang’s female masters team of Bernie O’Neil, Jennifer Reid and Lynn Angley made club history by winning their team race.
All three were delighted with their victory especially as it was the first time the club had entered a veteran ladies team in this competition.
Their male counterparts also won their masters race for the seventh consecutive time since it was first introduced. Brian Douglas, Robert Gilroy, Justin Carter and Jamie Reid finished well clear of the opposition.
There were also bronze medals for the men’s under 20/senior team of Gavin Smith, Ryan Thomson, club captain Iain Reid and Craig Jardine. Remarkably the club completed nine teams in the men’s race which was the best turnout on the day by any club and four of those teams were in the top 13 from 66 finishing teams.
The female young athlete team of Niamh Riggins, Christie Dalgleish and Ruth Kelly finished 24th overall out of 59 teams while the male young athlete trio of Robbie Woods, Brodie Aitken and Drew Pollock were 17th out of 60.
On the Sunday, the Harriers put their stamp on the UK Half Marathon Championship event. Robert Gilroy showed no tiredness from his cross country exertions the day before to win the race from club mate KerryLiam Wilson.
Robert picked up the over 40 gold medal and Kerry-Liam the over 45 gold. With Justin Carter in ninth place the team gold was secured. Stan MacKenzie in finishing only seven seconds behind Justin lost out on team gold by a narrow thread but he had the consolation of earning the over 50 gold medal.
Not to be outdone Erica Christie secured the ladies over 60 individual gold medal.
The club train at the Cambuslang and Rugby Sports club on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and new members over the age of 10 are welcome.
