Reformer readers are being urged to help in a spook- tacular record attempt.
With Hallowe’en just days away, Asda Toryglen will attempt to break the British record for dooking for apples at the store tomorrow, Thursday, October 27.
The current British record sits at 261 bobbing at the same time.
It was set by a group in Manchester back in 2010, when they beat the previous record of just 55.
There is no specific Scottish record, something Asda hope to put right tomorrow at 10.30am.
If enough people show up, they might even have a go at the world record that sits at 597. This was set by United Healthcare Community Plan of Ohio (USA) in Jackson, Ohio, USA, in 2011.
The Toryglen team will have plenty of apples, buckets and water on hand and leading the attempt will be Asda Toryglen’s, community champion and Apple ‘ bobber- in- chief ’, Elizabeth Arbuckle.
She said: “Apple bobbing at Halloween is a favourite tradition for many and we’re really looking forward to trying to set a new Scottish record.
“Anyone looking to have a refreshing wake- up call by dunking their head in a bucket of water and trying to catch an apple can join us on Thursday.
“We had been talking about doing something different for Hallowe’en and wondered how many folk we could actually get to do this.”
The practice is believed to have come from the Roman invasion of Britain when the conquering army merged their own celebrations with traditional Celtic festivals. The Romans brought with them the apple tree, a representation of the goddess of fruit trees, Pomona.
It was thought the apple could be used to determine marriages.
Asda aren’t the only local supermarket chain getting ready for Hallowe’en.
Morrisons in Cambuslang are offering free pumpkin carving classes tomorrow and Friday.
Brian Perston, store manager, said: “Hallowe’en is a big occasion for our customers with the perfect pumpkin taking centre stage in most UK households.
“We know some of our customers dread the annual carving, so we thought it useful to roll out our greengrocers - who can help turn their pumpkins into the perfect ghouls, ghosts, witches and Jack-o’-Lantern.
“We hope our classes, stencils and online tutorials will help make carving easier.”
The classes take place between 3.30pm and 4.30pm on Thursday, October 27 and Friday, October 28.
