Kenny’s aiming for silverware with Dons

- Murray Spooner

Cambuslang man Kenny McLean believes his good run of form has come at a good time for Aberdeen.

The former Cathkin High School pupil scored twice on Saturday in the Dons’3-1 win over Inverness just as they gear up for this weekend’s Betfred Cup final against Celtic.

And the midfielder, who didn’t get on the Hampden turf when St Mirren lifted the trophy three years ago, is hoping to play a momentous part at Hampden on Sunday.

Kenny, 24, who has left his medal at his parents’house in the Circuit area of Cambuslang, wants to be able to bring another one to Aberdeen this time around.

“It’s a final so it can go either way,”he told the Reformer.“I’m excited for it and we’re going into it with confidence but Celtic are in the exact same position.

“The final with St Mirren was very different. It wasn’t as exciting because, even though you’re delighted for the boys, you feel a bit left out.

“My medal is at my mum and dad’s house but hopefully I can win another one to bring up here to Aberdeen.”

Celtic have won 14 of their 15 domestic fixtures, including two wins over the Dons this season.

But McLean netted a double at the only venue where the Scottish champions have failed to win under Brendan Rodgers in an impressive victory against Inverness.

His first was a brilliantly executed free kick and the second a composed finish in the last minute.

The former St Mirren man’s double in a polished performance was a sign the Dons are hitting form at just the right time ahead of their Hampden showdown.

McLean said:“That’s me on four goals this season. I was pleased to get the goals on Saturday. It’s something I’ve been needing to add to my game.

“It was an important three points as we wanted to go into the final on the back of some good performances and victories - and we’ve managed to do that.

“It would have been easy to take the foot off the gas and think about the final but the manager drummed it into us all week this was an important game and we would have to dig in.

“It is a day where we will enjoy ourselves.”
