Railway work is planned

Residents living near Rutherglen Train station could be heading for some sleepless nights with work set to start on a major project.

But Network Rail have given assurances no loud work will take place near Rutherglen station on Christmas Day.

The group are set to carry out piling work near the station every Saturday night and Sunday morning from December 3 until April 16 from 11.30pm to 8am.

Engineers will also be onsite from 11.30pm on Christmas Eve until 8am on December 27, and again from December 31 until January 2.

Residents living nearby have been warned to expect some nosie from the works.

A meeting was held last week in Rutherglen Town Hall to explain the project.

The work involves “piling steel foundations to support new overhead line structures within Rutherglen East junction (between farm loan Road and Bogleshole Road).”

In a letter to residents, Network Rail’s communications manager for Scotland, Evelyn Brown, says: “Unfortunately the equipment we use - in this case road/rail vehicles and piling equipment - means that noise in unavoidable but we do all we can to minimise it.”

She added: “We understand that working by your property overnight is far from ideal but we are legally obliged to work on the railways at times that cause least disruption to trains. Unfortunately this means carrying out a lot of our work at the weekends or overnight.”

The news had raised some concerns that noisy work could disrupt Christmas or New Year celebrations.

But a spokesman told the Reformer they will not be undertaking any piling or heavy engineering works on these days.

They added: “We’d not anticipate it being excessively noisy.”
