It’s a bright Christmas for Burnside

Festive lights switch-on celebrations

- Edel Kenealy

The community of Burnside got into the festive spirit earlier this week by switching on the area’s Christmas lights.

Even the freezing cold could not keep the excited community away as dozens of people of all ages turned out for the festivities.

Councillor Russell Clearie and Burnside in Bloom treasurer Lucille MacNab had the honour of switching on the lights, with a little help from Andrew Ferguson, seven, and Jena MacNab, three.

They switched on the lights after Stonelaw High School Choir and the Celebration Choir from Burnside Church sang a number of Christmas Carols.

Hot pizza provided by Pappa John’s Pizzeria and Christmas pies, provided by Tesco Burnside, also helped revellers keep warm.

Malcolm Pigget from Burnside in Bloom, who organised the event, hailed it as a success. “It was a really nice evening,” he said. “After the celebrations, we were presented with a cheque for £ 500 from Caroline Kinloch, of Foster Funeral Directors, towards the work of Burnside in Bloom. We use these funds to pay for the tree and lights and thanks to the generosity of local residents and others we were able to provide a tree again this year.

“Burnside is looking better in the summer time [as a result of Burnside in Bloom], but we like to brighten the place up in winter.”
