Google treat as pupils tour the world – from classroom
Youngsters from Cambuslang were transported to the Galápagos Islands – without leaving their classrooms.
The pupils from Cathkin High School and Cairns Primary School went on a series of expeditions as they enjoyed a visit from internet giant Google.
The firm’s expedition programme sees youngsters wear virtual reality goggles which provide them with a 360 degree view of some of the world’s most famous landscapes.
Pupils choose to visit a range of destinations including the waters surrounding the Galápagos Islands, Rio De Janerio, Mount Everest, New York, Israel and even the moon.
They were amongst the first five schools in Scotland to benefit from the virtual reality tour offered by Google. And staff said it provided a glimpse into the future possibilities of education and learning.
Cairns Primary teacher Mrs Healy said: “Ahead of the visit, teachers were able to choose certain expeditions they would like their class to go on. The teacher was in control of everything the pupils could see and they led them through a series of images.
“The children loved it, and so did the teachers. It was very realistic and enjoyable for the pupils.
“It was a great stimulus for imaginative writing pieces and really gave the children a better understanding of setting.”
