I am writing to express my deep concern over the event which occurred this morning near St Columbkille’s Primary School.
My office has been contacted by several concerned constituents after a young girl was hit by a car on the way to school.
I understand she required hospital treatment for her injuries.
I am informed that the accident happened on Parkhill Drive, where until recently there was a crossing patrol attendant.
It is my understanding that this crossing patrol attendant was recently removed despite concerns being raised by parents, pupils, staff and myself that this action would put children at risk.
I note the council undertook risk assessments of the crossing in the latter part of 2015, and concluded that the road could be crossed safely.
Given recent events, this is evidentially not the case, as was pointed out when the school’s crossing patrol was withdrawn.
I am therefore calling on South Lanarkshire Council to reinstate the crossing patrol with immediate effect.
In order that I may advise my constituents who have made enquiries on this matter, please notify my office of the action which the council will undertake to ensure the safety of pupils at the school. Clare Haughey MSP Rutherglen constituency
