Churches join forces for website message

- Jonathan Geddes

A group of Cambuslang churches have joined together to share a message over the festive period.

Several Christian churches have set up a website aimed at giving locals a chance to reflect and pause for thought in the run-up to Christmas.

The site was the brainchild of Father Paul Morton, of St Bride’s Parish Church, while the other churches taking part are Cambuslang Parish Church, Flemington Hallside Church, Cambuslang Baptist Church and St Cuthbert’s Episcopal Church.

The site features full listings for everything going on during Christmas with the churches in Cambuslang, along with a reflective post from a different church member each day, information on Advent and information on Christmas traditions in general.

Leslie Milton, of Cambuslang Parish Church, was pleased to get involved with the project, and hopes the site leads to greater co- operation between the churches in the future.

He said: “It was Father Morton who really had the first idea and brought it to the rest of us.

“He thought it would be good to have a way of showing the churches all together and sharing and participating at Christmas time, and through it we can have the details for all the services and events going on in the area.

“However it’s really also to provide a bit of reflection and thought for people at what is a very busy period, and encouraging them to take a bit of time to step back and have a break for themselves.

“It’s really just a good thing to raise awareness of the churches in the community and it has already had a reasonably good reach across the community - hopefully it will encourage people to opt into some of the events taking place, whether they are part of a church or not.”

Leslie believes that the churches coming together also sends out a positive message, in a year that has been more notable for division than anything else.

He added: “It sends out a message of unity and togetherness at this time of year and it shows we are supporting one and other.

“If this continues to be successful we will look at doing something similar for Lent.

“Christmas is something that unites people of faith, if not Christian faith.

“This year has shown there are threats to the services provided for vulnerable people and as Christian churches we are looking at how to come together for those people in our society, and working together on something like this is a good step in that direction.”
