Glens get share of spoils

- Peter Ferguson at New Western Park

Renfrew .............1 Glencairn ...........1 Rutherglen Glencairn moved up into the top half of the league table with a point earned away against Renfrew.

There were three changes to the starting line-up after last week’s win over Maryhill. Top goal scorer Fraser Team, Del McNab and Ryan Docherty returned to the starting line-up.

The first big chance of the game came in the ninth minute as Ross Gallacher’s free kick saw ex-Glens striker Chris Zok get in front of Rhys Donaldson and glance a header narrowly wide.

The hosts should have opened the scoring in the 20th minute as Zok’s cross from the left saw Fraser miss his attempted clearance, allowing Marc McDaid to nip in but pull his shot wide.

Renfrew were on top at this stage, and Glencairn keeper JC Hutchison had to be on his toes to make an excellent double save in the 24th minute.

The deadlock was broken in the 36th minute with a touch of real quality. A high ball towards Team was headed out by Heffron to the edge of the penalty area, where Jay McKay was first to react as he fired the ball back over Burgess and into the roof of the net from 22 yards out.

There was little of note happening around either goal in the early stages of the second half, but Gallacher’s free kick in the 53rd minute was cleared before the resulting cross saw Docherty catch O’Keefe with his arm as he won the ball, with O’Keefe falling to the ground. The referee waited before pointing to the penalty spot and Scott Morton stepped up to send Hutchison the wrong way from 12 yards.

The Glens’Fraser hit the junction of the post and crossbar with a free kick as the visitors threw everything they could forward in the dying moments but Renfrew held on for a point.
