Rutherglen residents are just parking mad
Car-azy in Reid Street
Residents of a second Rutherglen road have hit out over drivers using it as a “private parking zone.”
Two weeks ago the Reformer told how drivers could be hit with parking tickets on Greenlees Road in Rutherglen, after two years of issues with drivers parking there.
Now locals on Reid Street have got in touch to say that they’ve been having similar issues and that it is a nightmare with cars parking there during the day.
One man, who asked not to be named, said: “People are just using it as if it’s a private parking area.
“They’ll be parking right up on the pavement or turning onto the corner and parking at right angles to the pavements, making it impossible to get past.
“There’s times I’ve been walking on the pavement and cars are just coming right up onto it because they’re parking there to go to the shops or to go the train station and don’t want to pay for it around there.
“The council have said there’s nothing more they can do, but it’s ridiculous as there’s about a couple of dozen cars all there.
“Then you get things like the bin lorry having to reverse slowly up and down because of how little room it has.
Head of roads and transportation services, Gordon Mackay, said: “We are currently in the process of promoting a traffic regulation order to restrict parking on sections of Reid Street.
“However, an objection has been received and we are considering this further.
“A section of Reid Street near Gallowflat Street has restrictions in place and these are enforced on a regular basis along with the other restrictions in Rutherglen.
“In general the council’s parking attendants are in Rutherglen on a very regular basis and a number of tickets were issued last year in Reid Street.
“The parking attendants will continue to frequently enforce regulations in Reid Street as well as other locations in Rutherglen.”
