New primary era starts
A head teacher has been appointed to the new primary school in Newton as enrolment gets underway for its first pupils.
Mrs Catherine Meechan will head up the school and associated nursery when it opens in August this year.
South Lanarkshire Council announced the appointment this month whilst reassuring parents the building of the school was progressing as planned.
Head of education at the council Des Dickson said: “We have appointed Mrs Catherine Meechan as the head teacher of the school, and she is looking forward to working with parents and members of the community to choose its name.
“Enrolment for children who are due to start in August has already begun. We are in the process of developing a web page for the new school to inform and update parents and the community.”
Parents of all school aged children within the Newton catchment area will receive a letter in the coming weeks inviting them to a meeting about the school on February 2, 2017.
Held between 6pm and 7.30pm at St Charles Primary School, the meeting will give people the chance to meet Mrs Meechan who will work wth parents on aspects of the internal design of the new school, the name of the new school, establishing an interim parent council and engaging with parents on the school uniform.
She will also oversee the recruitment of staff, as well as planning the learning, teaching and resource needs plus a whole host of other issues that will emerge in the coming months.
The new school has 14 mainstream classes, four additional support needs classes, a nursery and adjoining community hall with a 3G pitch.
Enrolment for the Newton school is taking place at Westburn Primary and applications for the Newton nursery class should also be made there. The closing date for new applications is April 30, 2017. Contact early years on 0303 123 1023 or email earlyyears@ southlanarkshire.gov.uk.
