Rutherglen Reformer

Cancer is something that has touched us all

- Douglas Dickie

Cancer - there’s a good chance that word means something to everyone who is reading this.

It is not beyond the realms of the imagination that all Reformer readers have been touched by cancer at some point in their lives.

I know I have. Very recently a friend received the devastating news that they had the disease. We await to see the prognosis, while keeping our fingers crossed it is positive.

This Saturday is World Cancer Day and it seemed right that we should mark it.

Over my years with the paper we have covered countless stories of bravery and people beating this horrible disease against the odds.

But sadly, all to often, cancer stories don’t have a happy ending. That was the case for our former editor and Cambuslang native, Kenny Smith.

Kenny sadly lost both his parents to the disease, and for World Cancer Day he kindly agreed to share his story.

You can find his tale on page 12. There you will find a powerful, emotional and brave piece from someone who knows only too well cancer’s destructive power.

At the Reformer we love to celebrate local success. On pages 22 and 23 you’ll find the story of a brother and sister from Fernhill who have gone on to musical success and will soon play with Elton John.

For those wishing to plan ahead, page 16 includes details of events at Cambuslang Park this year.

As well as all your local news, our regular features will keep you up to date with roadworks in the area (page 29) and on page 34 you have your say on the stories that matter.
