Council spent £15 m on town centre
South Lanarkshire Council have revealed they have spent £15 million on Cambuslang town centre.
The local authority used the money to develop commercial, retail and community space and to improve the appearance of the area and improve parking issues.
They have also assured Cambuslang shopowners they will continue to assist new businesses who wish to open in the town and believe they have made significant strides to improve the parking problem on and around the Main Street.
Pauline Elliott, South Lanarkshire Council’s head of planning and economic development said:“The condition and sustainability of all our town centres remains a priority for the council. Cambuslang, like many centres nationally, is susceptible to the changes in shopping patterns with the increase in online shopping as well as the closure of many high street brands following the economic downturn and the shift in the way people buy goods and services.
“The council will continue to assist new businesses who wish to open in town centre locations through both flexibility in the approach to property use and with assistance of our business support team.
“The council has invested over £15 million in Cambuslang Town Centre over the last 12 years to develop commercial, retail and community space and to improve the appearance of the area and improve parking issues.”

They stated the development delivered a variety of commercial retail and leisure space for rent along with the council library, other public sector such as job centre / health centre) facilities, office space, 39 residential flats and 74 public car parking spaces in the centre of the town.
The Cambuslang Streetscape project cost £700,000 in 2004 and a further £550,000 was spent on improvements to Cambuslang Precinct in 2009. South Lanarkshire Council say they both improved the appearance of the area.
The CTEC building, used to provide local businesses, community groups and training providers with high quality office accommodation for lease, and conference suites, training and meeting rooms for hire, came at a cost of £750,000 in 2007.
Cambuslang Park underwent a dramatic transformation in 2012 with the council and the Heritage Lottery Fund providing around £600,000 each.
£250,000 was spent on the acquisition of the site of the former fire station at Clydeford Road on which the council developed a facility of 24 sheltered housing units as well as to help with the relocation of the new fire station in 2011.
