Rutherglen Reformer

The Reformer counted five empty units, while nine takeaways and 12 hair and beauty shops line the Main Street.

Seven pubs and four betting shops contribute to the wealth of the town but residents are becoming concerned at the lack of different stores.

Others, however, have argued that an occupied unit such as a takeaway is better than no business at all.

Cambuslang resident Alan Kinloch said: “The council just allow them all to come in but most of them won’t open till 5pm so half the shops are empty during the day.

“And the bank closing won’t help the street at all. Of course we have online banking now but the older generation especially benefit from the bank on the Main Street.

“A lot of the people who use that bank don’t know how to handle online. They like the face to face aspect of it.”

Mary McKenzie said: “It’s a ghost town. There is really nothing here.

“All there is are pubs and takeaways. There used to be shops on both sides of the Main Street but that was years ago.”

Sam Haveron, who has lived in Cambuslang for 45 years, said he’s seen Main Street at it’s best and worst.

He said: “If it wasn’t for these takeaways, the units would all be empty. I’d like to see them occupied rather than not occupied.”

Liz Shaw, 68, of Drumsagard Village, added: “I’d like to see all the bins away and a deli open up. There’s absolutely nothing here for the older generation. “It’s going to end up a ghost town.” Cambuslang Community Council are collating the results for their Main Street business survey to get a detailed assessment of trends in business performance, perceived problems and priorities for improvement.

The final results should be issued in the next two weeks.
