CRIME BEAT

- Inspector Jim Gillespie

Since April 2016 there has been an increase in robberies across Lanarkshire, the majority of which have taken place either in the street, where an individual is the victim, or within commercial premises.

Robbery is an extremely serious crime and can have a significant impact on the victim. In Rutherglen and Cambuslang we do a great deal of work to try to prevent robberies from occurring, but when they do happen, a thorough investigation takes place. Whilst the chance of being a victim of robbery is extremely low I would urge members of the public to remain vigilant and, as always, ensure that you are keeping yourself safe.

If you’re out walking at night, particularly during the darker winter nights, please ensure that you are using well-lit paths and always try to be aware of everyone around you.

Just as we highlighted in our festive safety campaign, always make sure your mobile has sufficient battery life before setting off on any journey, in the event you need to contact police, or other emergency services or simply to contact a friend or family member to let them know you are on your way home.

When using an ATM be mindful to hide your pin number and be cautious of any persons who are standing too close to you. Don’t feel rushed at an ATM and always take your time and make sure you put any cash away securely before moving away.

Finally, if you have any information in relation to persons in your local area who are involved in this type of crime please contact us on 101, alternatively you can provide information anonymous via CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.
