Wheel hear of charity work

- Pat Bolton

Rutherglen’s Inner Wheel Club started 2017 with a talk from Susan Miller, enterprise manager for the social enterprises of Health n’Happy.

Susan told them 18 Farmeloan Road, the old East Church Hall, has been developed as a community hub with a large hall for social events and a smaller one more suited to meetings.

Camglen Radio also operates from the base, giving opportunities for bands to perform, to primary school classes to contribute programmes as well as going into schools to encourage them to set up school radios and allowing local charities to advertise their role.

Another role is creating opportunities for people to become DJs and for many this has been a confidence builder, allowing them to widen their interests and even opening work opportunities for them.

Inner Wheel members were interested in the smoothie bike project. This uses the power of pedalling to blend a smoothie and is available for hire for gala days and healthy food projects.

Next was the subject of Bike Town, sited in a unit in Thomson Place, off Cathcart Road, which refurbishes donated bikes for hire or sale and helps people learn how to look after their own bikes.

Susan said they also organise group cycling outings of varying distance.

The club members were delighted to hear that Healthy n Happy had won the charity governance award and was named the best voluntary organisation in the Glasgow Style award.

The group also heard the charity had received a glowing report from Education Scotland, which said it was a positive force for improving local communities.

The members were encouraged to consider how they and their families might want to become involved.

They could also help in other ways, like donating a bike that has been lying unused for years or taking unwanted wood from their shed or garage to the new men’s project.
