Promotion hopes lie in the balance

Loss in final game means wait for promo decision

- Murray Spooner

Cambuslang Rugby Club’s league title hopes were squashed as they fell to a shock 32-5 defeat to Millbrae.

The Coats Park side struggled in muddy conditions along with the added problem of several injured players in their final league game of the season.

They needed to win Saturday’s match to go top of the BT West Division 2 before Stewartry, who have now been crowned champions, play their last match on February 18.

But all is not lost for The Cambus who could still be promoted if other results in the BT National League Division 3 swing their way.

According to league officials, if one or no teams of the West region come down from that division, two teams will be promoted from the BT West Division 2. However, if two or more west teams come down, only Stewartry will be promoted.

Perthshire, Livingston, and Greenock currently occupy the three relegation spots while west based team Dalziel hover above them by 12 points.

Coach Jamie Seery said: “Obviously it would be great if we were to get promoted. The boys have worked hard all season and it would be well deserved.”

He added: “We are disappointed to lose our last game however, given the injuries we had including guys that maybe shouldn’t have played, it’s not surprising. Plus we played a very good Millbrae side who were the better team on the day.

“What was more important for me is the fact we had the 1s and 2s out playing which will hopefully be a more regular thing next season.

“While we are disappointed not to win the league we need to look at the bigger picture. At the start of the season we were lucky to have 15 first team players, now we have around 30 to select from. The hope is we will increase that for next season whether we are playing in West 1 or West 2.”

The squad now have a two week break before they will be back training in preparation for next season.
