Rutherglen and Cambuslang motorists are bracing themselves for traffic chaos next week when a section of Cambuslang Road shuts.

Network Rail are carrying out repair work to the bridge over the road.

From Monday, February 20, traffic will be unable to travel between Farme Cross and the roundabout connecting Cambuslang Road with Main Street.

The route is a major link to junction 2 of the M74. Vehicles are being urged to use Rutherglen Main Street, Caledonia Avenue, King Street and Farmeloan Road.

One driver, Lynn Love, 26, uses the road daily to get from her home in Cambuslang to her work in Glasgow’s city centre.

She said: “It is going to be an absolute nightmare.

“That road and junction are so busy at the best of times.

“Going by the Main Street will be murder as well. Traffic is often backed way up and the other junction of the M74 is packed all the time as it is.

“This will add so much time to my journey.”

Residents on some of the diversion routes have been left unhappy as well, with one reader telling us last week the Main Street is already like a “moving car park” during rush hour.

Work on the bridge includes strengthening the main girders and concrete bridge deck, blast cleaning and repairing the metalwork, applying corrosion protection to steelwork, painting the entire bridge, repairing masonry and clearing vegetation.

Pedestrians and cycles will still be able to access the full length of the road .

A Ne tw o r k Ra i l spokesman said: “Ahead of the closure of Cambuslang Road, we would encourage people to check if this is on their normal route, and plan a suitable alternative journey in advance.

“The sign posted diversion and other local routes around the closure will be busier than usual and people should leave more time for their usual journey.

“Pedestrian/ c ycle access will be maintained throughout as will access to local businesses adjacent to the bridge works.

“While we acknowledge this will be inconvenient, it is the most efficient, safest and least disruptive way to do the work required on the bridge and we appreciate the patience and co- operation of the road users and the local community as we repair and refurbish this structure.”
