Is there too much of a sugar rush in cereals?

Your views on youngsters’ brekkie picks

- Jonathan Geddes

Sugary cereals provide up to a third of a child’s daily sugar allowance, according to health campaigners.

The Action on Sugar group claimed that although cereal manufacturers have cut down on salt over the past decade, the likes of Crunchy Nut Corn Flakes and Special K have got too much sugar and salt in them.

We went out to Burnside to ask if residents thought there was too much going into a youngster’s breakfast.

Gerry Marshall, who was with daughter Emma, said: “There could be healthier eating available, but that’s not always the easiest thing to do with kids. Cereal still gives them a good start to the day, and if there’s too much sugar they can run it off at school.”

Donald McQuarie, with daughter Jessica, said: “My kids aren’t fond of cereal anyway, it’s more a croissant with them. I think they do well eating healthily with other things like vegetables but the cereals don’t make much of a difference.”

Aquila Singh said: “When I was a teacher you’d see it in classrooms that they’d be absolutely hyper and that’s because of the sugar – but that’s what makes it tasty, of course.”

Beth Russell said: “I think there is too much sugar in what they’re having.

“My daughter is quite fussy about that with her children, because the E numbers can make them so hyper.

“There should definitely be more options available and more information on just how much sugar is in there.”
