Members welcome deal

Members of Rutherglen Lawn Tennis Club have welcomed the move to take over the Burnside courts.

Of those who voted, only two failed to back the plan, meaning 97 per cent voted for the motion.

Committee member Eddy Graham thanked everyone who helped make their plan a reality and said: “This is a really exciting time for the club.

“It is absolutely brilliant that we are able to share and support this. This gives us a chance to share the wonderful spirit of this club with many people.”

The club is above recommended capacity and members are looking forward to an end to court congestion.

Gina Warrender, who has been a member for five years, said: “It’s just fantastic.

“It will alleviate the crowded courts and the fact we are getting artificial clay will help the juniors come on. They are the future of the club.

“This has been two years of hard work and it’s an incredible group we have here.

“There is still an awful lot of hard work to manage two sites but with the input from our members we will club together and make it work.”

David Maclean, who returned as a member seven years ago, said he had faith in the committee to make the expansion a success: “There are a lot of well qualified people up there and they know what they are doing.”

Graeme McAllister, who joined last year, said: “This is a really positive thing for the whole community.”
