Planning chief satisfied with provision for cars
In response to Cambuslang Community Council’s concerns about the town’s Main Street, South Lanarkshire Council said there was an “appropriate”amount of parking on the Main Street.
Pauline Elliott, the council’s head of planning and economic development, said:“A recent review of car parking on Main Street, which included consultation with businesses, demonstrated that there were competing needs between those that require a high turnover in parking which contrasted with those that require longer time to park.
“The review concluded that the current mixture of short and long stay parking in the town centre is appropriate.
“We will however continue to monitor parking practices and explore opportunities to reduce some of the issues as they arise including parking in the vicinity of the station.
“Roads and lighting faults should be reported via the council’s website by submitting a roads fault form and all matters raised will be investigated.”
Ms Elliot said the council were calling for a fairer system of business rates to stimulate economic growth.
She said:“South Lanarkshire Council are keen to assist our local businesses to meet the economic challenges of modern times.
“There are a range of models used for the delivery of town centre initiatives including Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), community lead approaches and tourism/heritage approaches. Each of these are designed to increase footfall in the town and need to be tailored to the particular circumstances of each town. The council will look to support similar initiatives being developed among the community in other areas.
“Cambuslang, like many centres nationally, is susceptible to the changes in shopping patterns with the increase in online shopping as well as the closure of many high street brands following the economic downturn and the shift in the way people buy goods and services.”
