Shahzman wins

- Murray Spooner

Rutherglen boxer Shahzman Parnez claimed Duries BC their first win of the season at the Western District finals.

The 12 -year-old Stonelaw High School pupil took on Southside Academy of Boxing lad Csaba Szilagyi at the 50kg weight division on Sunday, February 12.

Shahzman boxed fluently in the first round, controlling everything with his long left hand jab and back hand rights.

He clearly won the second round but tired towards the end of the bout and hardly threw a punch. He went on to lose the final round.

But when all eyes turned to the scorecards, the match went in favour of the Duries boxer 4-1 from the five judges to make Shahzman the first champion of the season for the Rutherglen club.

Coach Archie Durie commented:“What made this title win for Shazman so much harder to win was the fact that his training preparation fell to pieces last month when he lost his gran, grandad, and three other family members.

“I withdrew him from last month’s Intermediate Championships as it happened at the same time.

“But after speaking with his dad Zack, he told me they would like him to still box last weekend in the championships

“And I felt so proud see him win on Sunday as I could see what it meant to him and his family.”

Fellow Stonelaw pupil Brandon Grant was also entered to represent the club at the competition in Milton but pulled out due to illness.

O’Neils Boxing Club member Chloe Bodwick also won gold at the event.

Chloe won by unanimous decision in her respective 50kg bout to take the win for the Cambuslang club.
