Will you be watching the new TV channel?

BBC Scotland to hit screens in 2018

- Murray Spooner

I think we do need another channel and it’s something I would watch Tony Parry

A new TV channel will hit our screens next year which will include a Scottish news hour and a focus on drama and factual programming.

The channel, BBC Scotland, will broadcast from 7pm to midnight every evening and create 80 new jobs.

It will also have a budget of £ 30m, the equivalent to the amount spent on BBC4.

This week we asked Burnside shoppers for their thoughts on the announcement.

An integrated hour-long news programme at 9pm appealed to Tony Parry from Cambuslang. “A new channel is a good idea,” he said. “It will be good to find out more about what is happening up here rather than a focus on what goes on down south.

“We do need another channel and it’s something I’d watch.” Gordon Bryce from Rutherglen agreed. “It’s not a bad idea,” he said. “It will be good to have Scottish news rather than always national.

“There are a lot of channels, but it does give you a lot of choice.”

Burnside’s Theresa Muir however, was content with the channels already on offer.

She said: “There are far too many as it is. You obviously won’t have any adverts because it’s the BBC but there’s so many channels that so many of them don’t get watched.”

Jack Wilson from Rutherglen agreed: “The only positive is probably staff employment but I’m not complaining about what we already have.”
