Gordon’s family in charity boost

Rutherglen dad died out on a walk

- Jonathan Geddes

The family of a Rutherglen man who tragically passed away aged just 43 have raised money for charity in his memory.

Gordon MacDuff, of Bankhead Avenue, collapsed and died of a heart attack when out for a Saturday morning walk on King’s Park Avenue in February 2014.

His partner Heather, 47, has now held charity nights for the past three years, with the money from each night going towards the British Heart Foundation and Sands, a charity that provides support for families that have lost a baby.

Heather gave birth to a stillborn baby in 2007.

This year’s event raised £3,237.20 for the two charities.

She said: “We made the money through ticket sales, raffles and having lucky pounds, as well as a having a wee auction for Rangers and Celtic memorabilia.

“There were people from my work and Gordon’s work there as well as friends and family - we could have sold it out two or three times over because there were so many people who wanted to be there.

“The first year I did it I wrote to as many places as possible and asked for items we could raffle and auction , the second year it was down to mostly the family and friends to help and this year we wrote to a few other companies - we explained what it was in the past and they were kind enough to donate.”

The couple’s two daughters, Aimee, 8, and Chloe , 5, were there on the night.

Heather added: “They were both there for part of the evening, before it got too late, so they were involved in it.

“I just really want to say thank you to everyone for keeping Gordon’s memory so alive.

“It still feels like yesterday when we lost him.”

A keen footballer who played for Rutherglen Amateurs over 40’s, Gordon had suffered his first heart attack in September 2013 while playing football .

On February 12, 2014, he was told by doctors he could resume his football career, but just days later he passed away.

The full list of companies and individuals that helped on the night can be found on our letters page this week.
