Festival fun days

South Lanarkshir­e Leisure and Culture’s 12th annual ‘ Young at Heart’ Festival will have a number of events running in Rutherglen this month.

Celebratin­g the arts as ‘engaging and accessible for all’, the festival is aimed at those aged 50 and over and will run from March 7-18.

And the programme does indeed offer something for everyone with events running day, night and weekend over 11 actionpack­ed days.

South Lanarkshir­e’s cultural venues will come into their own hosting a fabulous array of shows including: Scottish Opera Highlights; ABBA tribute ‘ Thank You for the Music’; Snake Davis, the Sax Man and Meeting Ronnie ( that guy fae the Corries). U2 and Eagles tributes, and a ‘Movies and Musicals’ show with festival favourite Edward Reid are also highlights.

Theatre lovers are also spoiled for choice with the plays ‘Winchin’’ and ‘Some Kind of Sanctuary’.

Also on the varied list are workshops and heritage events, tea dances, crafts, textiles, jewellery making and sewing tuition.

‘Appetite for Apps’ will show those taking part that there really is an ‘app for everything’ whilst a Lego workshop will be pure child’s play.

And new for this year is ‘Active Arts Mornings’ with opportunit­ies to try a range of arts and cultural opportunit­ies from dance and digital photograph­y to drums and singing.

Thursday, March 9 - Tea dance with John Findlay, Rutherglen Town Hall, 1pm.

Friday, March 10 - Hold the Door - Rutherglen Town Hall, 1pm.

Friday, March 10 - Winchin’, Rutherglen Town Hall, 7.30pm.

Saturday, March 11 - The Flying Deuces, Rutherglen Town Hall, 2pm.

Tuesday, March 14 - Free recital: Ross Wilson, Rutherglen Town Hall, 2pm.

Wednesday, March 15 - Active arts morning, Fernhill Community Centre, 10am.

Wednesday, March 15 - An Afternoon at the Musicals with Edward Reid, Rutherglen Town Hall, 1pm.

Friday, March 17 - A Great Yarn, Rutherglen Town Hall, 10am.

Friday, March 17 - Jewel Brooch, Fernhill Community Centre, 2pm.

If you are over 50 and interested in the arts then this festival is for you, and we are confident that there really is something for all in this appealing and unique programme.”

Whilst there are a number of free events, most events are charged – with some offering reduced prices for Activage members. Places are limited for most events so advance booking is advisable.
