Churches set to be on song together

Hitting the high notes with the Big Sing at King’s Park

- Jonathan Geddes

A quartet of local churches are to team up and hit the right notes this Sunday.

Toryglen Parish Church, King’s Park Church, Croftfoot Parish Church and Croftfoot United Free Church are the four parishes involved in the Big Sing event, which will be held at King’s Park.

The congregations will gather and sing hymns in the afternoon, while there will be a puppet show by the Clincarthill church puppets to entertain youngsters.

King’s Park minister Sandra Boyd believes the afternoon is a good chance for members of all the different churches to mingle.

She said: “We have done this several times before and we call it Local Churches Together.

“We thought we would do it on the Sunday afternoon because that can often be a quiet afternoon, so hopefully we’ll bring a few more people in.

“We also thought it might encourage more children to come along, rather than hold it in the evening.

“It’s a chance to sing old and new hymns and it’s a chance to share together all the things we have in common among the churches.

“We all sing, we all praise God and we can make a bigger noise by being together on an afternoon like this.”

Sandra is also hoping that the puppet show will prove a hit with children.

The Clincarthill Church Puppet team has been active in and around the church, based on the south side of Glasgow, since 2012.

Their aim is to bring the gospel of Jesus to the community through the use of puppets in an entertaining, attractive yet challenging way.

They do this by singing songs and sketches, and telling bible stories in a new light.

Sandra added: “Having the puppets should make the afternoon more fun for all ages.

“The puppet ministry was a way of getting younger people involved and encouraging families to come along, because they perform lots of bible stories and bits and pieces like that.

“Its a different medium to translate the good news of Jesus, it involves humour and allows the stories to be told in a different way.

“We will also have the hymns introduced by members of the different churches so it will be the congregation.

The Big Sing will take place at 3pm on Sunday March 5.

All are welcome to attend.

We all sing, we all praise God and we can make a bigger noise by being together”
