New festival heading to Motherwell this month

- Festival

A brand new music festival which aims to promote the best local musicians as well as some of Scotland’s hottest emerging talent will take place in Motherwell this month.

Motherwell Makes Music will take place on the weekend of March 17-19 across various venues throughout the town. Concerts will be performed in places such as Motherwell Concert Hall, The Electric Bar and Jack Daniels being among the hosts of the 16 bands announced already. Bands scheduled to play include Motherwell bands A Sudden Burst of Colour and the Banter Thiefs and Wishaw’s Homeward James.

Organiser Derek Watson, who is also the drummer in the Banter Thiefs, said: “This is something I’ve been thinking about for a long time as there isn’t much opportunity for bands to perform locally, or for those from further afield to play in the town.

“Initially I thought we would have about 20 bands performing, but so many have got in touch asking to be involved there will be a lot more than that.

“We have a great line-up already with more to be announced, and I hope the Motherwell public will come out to the gigs and we can make this an annual date on the calendar.”

Organisers are confident the initial year of the festival will be a success and Motherwell Makes Music will become an annual feature in the town’s event calendar.

The success follows on from various local music showcases such as the Uddingston Music Festival which ran for the fourth consecutive year last month.

The week-long festival gives local musicians the chance to perform to a wider audience, something which organiser Derek wants from Motherwell Makes Music.

He added: ““If Uddingston can arrange a week-long music festival, then we must be able to pull it off in Motherwell, and get a bit of a buzz going about the Lanarkshire scene.”

The full lists of bands currently signed up are as follows: Among the bands who have signed up are: Bloodlines, A Sudden Burst of Colour, ULTRAS, The Banter Thiefs, Holy Pistol Club, The Vistas, Foggy City Orphan, Dogtooth, Pyramids, Mesmerene, Caulder, The Austins, The Un- Romantics, The Ranzas, Homeward James and Tommy McGuire.

Early bird tickets will be priced at £10 plus booking fee and can be purchased from www.motherwellmakesmusic. bigcartel.com.

Tickets to individual performances will cost £6.
