Rutherglen Reformer

Is it time to resume independence debate?

Should Scots get another chance to vote?

- Edel Kenealy

Theresa May has shot down the Scottish Government’s request to hold another independence referendum in the autumn of 2018 or the spring of 2019.

With Scots once again talking about independence, the Reformer took to the streets of Burnside to ask locals if it was indeed the right time to resume the debate.

Charles Carmichael said: “I don’t think it’s the right time at all. I think it’s a worse time. The economy is not the same as it was. I think the result would be worse than it was as well.

“It was close the last time, I think it would be a lot worse for independence this time around. They had their chance.”

Warick Sloan agreed: “We had a vote just two years ago. It was supposed to be decided for good. There shouldn’t be a referendum at all. I don’t believe in independence.”

Ian Rutherford is another no voter. He said: “I don’t think it’s the right time, it has already been done and they had the result. You can’t keep on having referendums until you get the result you want. The issue of EU membership is not a strong enough reason to do it again.”

But Scott Dalziel said Brexit did create a fundamental change. He added: “I don’t know that it’s the right time, but it is worth trying.

“I wouldn’t be in favour of it and I was a yes voter the first time around.

“Promises made in Westminster never come through, they never think outside of the M25.”

I don’t think it’s the right time. It has been done and they had a result
