Pupils help homeless

Unit is overwhelmed

- Douglas Dickie

A homeless unit in Cambuslang has been left stunned by the generosity of pupils at Cathkin High.

After researching the Eva Burrows Centre, fourth year pupils Sophie Crichton, Kerri Edgar, Melissa Keary, Nikola Legierska, Zoe Yeung, Chloe Ware and Courtney Wilson, asked staff at the school to donate items to help families who use the service.

Soon, Mrs Payne’s religious, moral and philisophical studies (RMPS) room was overflowing with nappies, wipes and toys all ready to be donated.

Margaret McKinlay of the First Stop Project visited the school to collect the goods.

She said: “At the moment, we have a seven week old baby and her mother in one of our family rooms so these items are essential.

“We are so grateful for the kindness shown by these girls as some of the people who utilise our charity come with what they can carry.

“These items will be crucial in helping aid these families”

Mrs Payne, the girls’ RMPS teacher, added: “After finding out about the amazing work the charity does in their area, the girls have been outstanding in collecting donations and contacting the charity.”

The charity aims to provide a ‘ first stop’ temporary accommodation for homeless or struggling families.

Their accommodation, based in Halfway, consists of 32 rooms with four family rooms. Some of their clients stay a week, some stay as long as eight to nine months before they are moved to a temporary furnished flat and then out on their own.
