Burnside pupils stand still to read their book

School organise mannequin challenge for special day

- Jonathan Geddes

Burnside Primary pupils were completely still and quiet recently - but only for a minute.

The usually excitable youngsters had taken time out to pose for the mannequin challenge, while also reading a book.

The pose was part of the fun for World Book Day, with the school arranging a host of events to stress to pupils the importance of reading.

Head teacher Helen McGarvey said: “We had a mannequin challenge when following a bell, all pupils and staff froze in a pose while reading a book - the stillness could be felt through the building!

“Every class also took part in a ‘ReadIn’ in our general play room.

Children enjoyed half an hour of reading for pleasure in their World Book Day costumes, and the Big Buddies and Little Buddies read together, with cushions, covers, torches and mood lighting filling the darkness.

“Our senior pupils also had a ‘Speed Read’ where they grabbed a few minutes with a classmate to give them a round-up of their book, before moving on to another friend at the buzzer.

“Finally Badger the Mystical Mutt and friend (aka authors Lynn McNicol and Laura Jackson) visited pupils in P1-4 who had great fun with them.

“All in all, there were loads of great activities and also have some brilliant entries in to our ‘ reading books in our weird and wonderful places competition which closes on Friday, March 24.”

World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and reading in general.

It is the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.
