LADIES NIGHT FUN
Successful event raises thousands for school project
It was ladies night and the feeling at Fernhill Community Centre was right as parents and teachers came together to raise thousands of pounds for a Rutherglen primary school.
The fundraising committee for St Anthony’s Primary collected £3248.75 to support and improve books and reading materials for the school.
Money raised will also go towards supporting the head teacher, Miss Rafferty, in her quest to add a nurture room in the building.
The ladies enjoyed a raffle with some impressive prizes on offer, including a £300 hair dryer, and X Factor finalist Nicholas MacDonald also made an appearance to sing and pose for pictures.
Member of the fundraising committee and the host for the evening on March 4, Deborah Cunningham, were very grateful to all who donated prizes and ladies who attended.
She said: “We are really trying to extend the school. We want to extend it to kids who perhaps struggle with reading and writing.
“The main aim of our fundraising is to support and improve the literature in the school as well as supporting the head teacher who is now able to go ahead with a nurture room for the school.
“My wee boy was getting books which weren’t in great condition but that was because the head teacher didn’t have a lot of money to spend.
“We had aimed to raise £ 10,000 before the summer holidays so we are well on the way to doing that.
“We raised £2600 at the Christmas fair and over £500 at the Hallowe’en disco and are hoping to host a race night too.”
The nurture room is a place within the school where children can be given freedom to express themselves. The aim is to effectively address the children’s needs and prevent exclusion from the classroom and any distress caused by them not having the coping skills, through no fault of their own.
The idea has been something Miss Rafferty was keen to bring to St Anthony’s. She said: “It was a great night. I would like to say a big thank you to all the ladies who organised it.
“The school are very appreciative of the all the hard work that went into the night. It also brought together the community which is something St Anthony’s is all about. The money raised will go towards literacy and health and well being resources which will make a significant difference to the children’s learning.”
