Light a candle at St Columbkille’s

- Jonathan Geddes

A Rutherglen church is to encourage reflection by candlelight as part of an innovative evening.

St Columbkille’s RC Church will host the night on Friday, March 31, having been recently refurbished, and it will be open to people of all faiths, or none.

The building will be lit by candles, while sacred and contemporary music will add to the backdrop.

Those wishing to escape for a time will be welcomed in to light a candle and sit and enjoy a moment or longer of peaceful reflection or prayer, while listening to liturgical and non-religious music.

Exposition of the blessed sacrament and confession will be available for those who wish it.

The evening follows on from a highlysuccessful similar event in December, part of the St Columbkille’s Church mission week.

The mission week was aimed at welcoming back parishioners, lapsed and current, to the church, which has undergone a multi-million pound refurbishment over the last couple of years.

Katie McMillan is of the parish and one of the organisers of the event:

She is optimistic that the evening might encourage people from different faiths to stop by and take a few moments to reflect on things on their life.

She said: “The last event was such a success we’re having another.

We noticed last time that many people were passing the church that evening and looking in, but seemed a bit hesitant to come further.

“Our church is beautiful and has been such a prominent feature of the local area for a long time, many locals must have wondered what it is like inside.

“This time we’re saying ‘come on in to those of all faiths and none.
