We made hard work of win

-

Rutherglen Glencairn gaffer Willie Harvey reckons Saturday’s victory over Shotts Bon Accord was made more difficult than it needed to be.

The Bonny pulled a goal back twice in the second half to set up a nervy ending to the game but Jamie Hamilton’s tap-in late on sealed the three points.

The result keeps alive The Glens’ hopes of sneaking into the promotion mix – and they are now only six points behind second-placed Shettleston who visit The Celsius Stadium this weekend.

Despite Shotts being on a run of four straight defeats, Harvey was aware they would be keen to derail their chances of a top three finish.

“It was a good game by the fact it turned out a win for us but we made it harder for ourselves than it should have been,” he said.

“At 2-0 we should have buried the game. We missed a couple of chances and the keeper has made a couple of good saves but we gave away a soft goal. It was poor defensively but it was good we reacted well and got the third goal. And again it was shoddy defending at their second.

“Each time we’ve given them the chance to come back into the game but we got our fourth which killed it off.

“It was a good goal with great passing. Fraser Team has done well out wide and played the ball in for Jamie Hamilton to knock it in.

“It was a decent enough performance. The boys did well but we were made to work for it.”

Defender Ryan Docherty was handed a straight red card for a challenge on Paul Doyle in the closing stages of the match. The decision was hotly disputed by the Glencairn players and the club are set to appeal it.

When asked for his views on the sending off, Harvey said: “It was absolutely disgraceful. It was a good enough tackle as you will see.

“Obviously we are going to appeal it. Even in the ref’s report he said he got the ball first.

“To be honest Doyle made a meal of it and he’s screamed the place down and he’s just got straight back up after it. “We’ll keep our fingers crossed and hope that common sense prevails.”
