Double bill lined up for church acoustic night

Joe has his roots in rock

- Jonathan Geddes

The popular series of gigs at Stonelaw Parish Church will continue with a double bill of talent on Friday, March 31.

Joe McIver Dunn and the Mairs Family Band will be performing.

Joe’s love of music and early interests are rooted in blues and rock, with influences from the Velvet Underground and Led Zeppelin to Jimi Hendrix and the original Fleetwood Mac.

More recently Joe has developed a hunger for Scottish traditional and folk music, while bluegrass, Irish ballads and Gaelic song all play a part in his repertoire.

This has much to do with attending acoustic nights promoted by the Mairs family.

Until recently Joe’s playing and performance career was limited to a rock band in his late teens before being invited by the Mairs to take a floor spot at their monthly acoustic nights at Stonelaw, which reignited his passion for singing and playing guitar.

Joe also has a love for worship music and plays regularly with bands at Nazarene Church in Bankhead and his own church, Easterhill in Tollcross.

The lively Mairs Family Band feature styles from contemporary to traditional with bluegrass vocal harmonies, including a gospel repertoire.

All members of the band have had many years experience in the live music scene and have toured three times in the USA.

Alan Mairs plays fiddle, mandolin and guitar and also sings lead and harmony vocals.

Louise Mairs also plays rhythm guitar and is a songwriter. Her main instrument with the band is resonator guitar.

Hazel Mairs is the daughter of Louise and Alan. She plays double bass and mandolin and sings lead and harmony vocals.

Joining the band on five-string banjo is Cameron Oliphant, who has played extensively in the Scottish folk and bluegrass scene.

Entry is £5, including tea/coffee and home baking. Children under 16 go free.

The show starts at 7.30pm.
