Merit awards roll of honour
The sports awards also recognised the achievements of individuals nominated throughout the year.
Female merit awards went to: Rachel Sinclair for winning the indoor bowls championships in 2016 and outdoor Presidents Cup; Jackie Clark who was part of the Kirkhill Tennis Club winning team who won division six at the Dunlop West of Scotland Summer League; O’Neils boxer Chloe Bodwick after she won a Scottish Championship gold medal, Caitlin Connor for her first place in Scottish Championships for climbing; Emma Green - winner of the tennis ladies singles at the club championships in Cambuslang; Taekwondo gold medallist Keira McInulty; Team GB ice figure-skater Taylor McLeod; Cambuslang Harriers runner Niamh Riggins and Allie Slivinski who was a three-time gold medallist at Scottish Gymnastic Acrobay.
The male merit award winners included: O’Neils boxers Paul Murphy and Nicholas Devlin who both claimed a gold medal in the Scottish Championships; Rutherglen swimmers Ethan Horn; Jonathan Christie and Johann Fawcett; Scotland School’s footballer John Kelly; Blair Kennedy who won gold at the 11 years 100m backstroke; Cain Mitchell who placed fifth at the West of Scotland Scottish School Games; cross country runner Gavin Smith; Scottish Open Poonmsae (taekwondo) gold medallist Rian McInulty and Scottish National Open Waters Champion Caolan Millard.
Team Merit awards were presented to: Kirkhill Lawn Tennis ladies first team- champions of division six; Burnside Primary School - who have been working towards their Sportscotland gold award; St Charles’Primary School for providing a range of activities for all of their children; Melaine Gorrie who showed dedication and commitment in her postilion at Rutherglen Taekwondo Club; Martin Hold for organising the Taekwondo championships in Scotland; Cambuslang rugby coach Jim McGhee; O’Neils boxing coach Brian Murphy; Rutherglen Tennis Club president Gareth Ellor; swimming coach Angela McGhee; Kirkhill Tennis Club’s Susan Reader-Harris; Lisa McGeady who volunteers at Spectrum Gymnastic Club and Sophie Watson who fundraised to buy costumes for Trinity High School’s gymnasts to compete.
