Late drama at the Celsius

- Peter Ferguson

Glencairn staged a dramatic comeback to grab all three points on Saturday against 10-man Irvine Vics.

They came from behind with four minutes left of normal time to equalise and then grab a dramatic winner in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

The Vics had clearly been fired up by their win over local rivals Irvine Meadow in their last game and were on the front foot first, going close with George Bonner’s header.

Glencairn responded a minute later with a similar move, as Tony Fraser’s cross picked out the head of Stewart Hall, only for Chris Lamb to make his first save of what was a busy afternoon.

JC Hutchison produced a brilliant diving save down low to his left to keep out Bryan Slavin’s header in the 10th minute before the play swung back to the other end once again.

Jay McKay cut the ball back for Sean McGuire but his shot was blocked into the air before Stewart Hall headed the ball against a defender which flicked on to the post.

The Vics stunned everybody by taking the lead against the run of play on the half-hour mark. A passing move ended with a speculative shot from distance by Kevin Adam which seemed to deceive Hutchison as it skipped off the surface past him into the net.

The siege on the Vics’goal continued and early in the second half Fraser’s cross from the right picked out Hall who took a touch round Lamb but could not wrap his leg round the ball and instead hit the post.

David Adams, who had been shown yellow earlier for diving, was given a second yellow for comments made to the assistant referee.

The Glens players refused to give up and got their reward with an equaliser in the 86th minute. Tony Fraser’s inswinging corner from the right was met by the head of Del McNab who glanced the ball into the net.

The drama continued deep into added time and the home fans were delighted in the 94th minute when they were awarded a penalty.

A cross from the right struck the arm of a defender inside the penalty area and McKay sent Lamb the wrong way.
