Deadline day deal for striker

- Murray Spooner

Rutherglen Glencairn made a successful deadline day swoop for Cambuslang Rangers striker Alessandro Savarese as the transfer window slammed shut on Friday.

The 21-year-old has swapped the blue of the Lang for the black and white hoops at Glens after he broke his ankle at the start of this season and failed to nail down a spot in Paul McColl’s starting 11.

Having scored the winning goals for Tower Hearts under-21s against Glencairn under-21s at season in both the League Cup final and the championship decider, the striker will be a familiar face to Glens fans.

New boss Willie Harvey believes the player has made the correct choice by choosing to join Lang’s local rivals.

He said: “Alessandro is one who we’ve been interested in for a while. He played against our under-21s and we were looking at him at him before the start of the season. But a coach at Tower Hearts moved to Cambuslang and took several players with him.

“He was made available late last week and we moved quickly for him. He’s a good striker who can score goals.”

The Glens also signed ex-Brechin City midfielder Craig Johnston.

Michael Collinder exited Somervell Park for Wishaw Juniors while Cambuslang made a deadline day signing of their own.

Jordan Morton has put pen to paper with the Wee Gers for the remainder of the season.

The former Cumnock Juniors player is a young right-sided midfielder or winger.
