McKay notches winner

- Peter Ferguson

Irvine Victoria....0 Glencairn ...........1 Glencairn top scorer rearranged a holiday flight so he could play 60 minutes of this match, and it proved a great move as he notched the only goal of the game.

There were three enforced changes to the starting line-up after last week’s dramatic win at Petershill. Craig McGregor was replaced by Rhys Donaldson and Ryan McArdle failed to shake off a back injury and his place was taken by Stewart Hall. The other change saw Alan Muir returning after a spell out with a calf injury, replacing Tony Fraser.

There was an early scare for Glens when Hutchison tried to dribble the ball clear only to be dispossessed but Donaldson managed to clear.

Glens soon took control though and there were openings for Team and Hall before Lamb saved from McNab.

Hutchison nearly gifted Vics an undeserved opener when he was too casual trying to collect a headed pass back and Docherty was forced to clear Adams’s hot off the line.

Glens made the breakthrough in the 36th minute. After a short corner Hamilton volleyed the ball across goal and McKay was there to head home his 15th goal of the season.

McNab and Team both saw shots blocked or deflected as Glens dominance continued towards half-time.

The goalscorer left the action in the 56th minute to finally go on holiday, with Savarese replacing him.

And he was involved when lamb denied Glens with a stunning save. Savarese cut the ball across goal where it was met by Team, but somehow Lamb managed to get a hand to the ball.

Hutchison saved from Ablorh as Vics enjoyed a rare flurry forward, with Docherty and Neil completing the clearance for Glens.

Team continued to threaten at the other end, latching onto Hall’s head flick before hitting an angled shot on the drop about a foot over the bar.

Rutherglen Glencairn: Hutchison, Donaldson, Docherty, Muir, Neil, Hunter, McNab, Hamilton, Team (Cullen), Hall, McKay (Savarese). Subs not used - Johnston, McArdle, McAllister (gk).
