BOWLS: AROUND THE GREENS

-

Overtoun

Overton Park Bowling Club’s new president, Anna McLean, welcomed around 40 ladies and gents on Saturday for the club’s opening day.

After the welcomes and introductions, honorary president Robert Brown threw the first jack.

The weather stayed dry and warm enough to allow 12 ends to be played with the prize being the Reformer Trophy.

The runners-up were Ann McAlpine, Jim Eggie, Dougie Noddings and Benny Brown while the winners, by one shot, were Colin Harvie, George Lappin, Gerry Ritchie (Kirkhill guest), and John Meikle.

After some very generous raffles and a free drink courtesy of president Anna, members and guests enjoyed a lovely meal.

President Anna would like to thank all who helped make her first day as president so memorable: Hon president Robert Brown, guests, committee members and all who participated.

As usual, the hospitality was superb and only possible because of all the hard work done by a large number of club members.

Anna would also like to thank the gents of the greenkeeping team for preparing the green, James and Lesley Masterson for the attractive flower beds and pots and all who sent good wishes for a successful season.

Burnside

The new season is now well under way and despite the rather cool temperatures, a few brave souls have been out shaking off the winter rust.

Monday night saw the second aggregate game of the season take place.

The victorious team, winning by 16 shots, was Jim Burns, Joe McFadyen and skipped masterfully by Snudge Allan.

On the same night the first round of ties for the JVP Fours tournament took place, the second round will be on Monday night next week.

The lists are now up for the upcoming games against Kirkhill and Cambuslang.

Members are asked to make sure they show their interest in playing in the games as soon as possible.

The match secretary has now published the list of names to play in the Rutherglen and District, Glasgow Bowls Association and Scottish Bowls Association competitions on the club boards.

All involved are asked to confirm their availability quickly.

The seniors will be playing their first games this coming Thursday and the club wish them a successful season representing them all.

Halfway and District

Last Saturday saw Ladies Day (sponsored by Drumsagard Academy 2001s) take place at Halfway and District.

Forty players took part on what is always an enjoyable day that sees some of the academy player’s parents take part.

Eventual winners were Jim McCafferty, Robert Thomson, Fiona Firth and Helen Torrance.

It is a free weekend coming up but May is a busy month and is kicked off by the Robert Dick Mixed Pairs on Saturday, May 6 with a 10am start.

Sheets for all the upcoming competitions are on the noticeboards in the bowls house.

The draws for the knockout ties will take place this week and will be on the noticeboards by Friday.

Teams for external competitions will also be picked over the next week.

Whitefield

Following the sad events of last week when the club learned of the passing of their twice president and honorary member, Patrick Gallagher, there was a return to some degree of normality at the Whitefield.

Unfortunately, the Ladies Balloted Pairs event due to be held on Saturday was cancelled due to lack of numbers and the Ladies Day scheduled for Saturday coming will be postponed until another suitable date can be found.

The Annual Gents Parish match against Cambuslang will be held on Saturday, May 6 at Cambuslang with a 1.30pm for 2pm start.

The gents aggregate winners were David Hefferland, Tam McLinden and Michael O’Hagan who were 18 shots up.

The ladies aggregate is played on Wednesday and, as with the Gents, starts at 7pm prompt.

The first winners were Muriel Doyle and Andrea Russell. The numbers participating are pretty low at the moment so any lady member wishing to play would be more than welcome.

The senior representative games swing into action with the first week of the Cambuslang and District League.
