I have been Liberal Democrat councillor for Rutherglen South since 2012.
I graduated with first class honours from Aberdeen University, served as procurator fiscal depute in Dumbarton and was senior civil partner with a major Rutherglen and Glasgow legal firm.
I was a councillor for the Rutherglen South and Fernhill wards for 15 years, then MSP for Glasgow for 12 years. I served as deputy minister for education and young people in the Labour/ Liberal Democrat coalition in the Scottish Parliament.
Rutherglen South has seen major improvements with the regeneration programme in Fernhill and Cathkin. The Liberal Democrats now want to speed up tackling problems in older council houses – old crumbling roughcast and roofs in areas like Cathkin, Blairbeth, Spittal and Fernhill; problems with back courts, decaying tenement closes and bin shelters in Springhall. Tenants are entitled to decent houses and are right to complain.
