A bridge over a railway line in Cambuslang requires emergency repairs after a drunk driver ploughed his car into it on Saturday night.

Residents near Croft Road in Cambuslang reported the driver shortly after 9.30pm.

The 31-year-old, who was allegedly three times the drink drive limit, had crashed his red, Volkswagen Golf where the road crosses the railway line.

Officers attended and breathalysed him.

The driver, who is from Cambuslang, was released on an undertaking and will appear at court on a later date.

The collision dislodged parts of the bridge parapet which fell close to the tracks below.

Network Rail have now been forced to move on site to make the bridge secure having carried out a temporary repair at the weekend.

Residents living nearby were sent letters this week telling them about the works, which will take place during the night until June 12.

Croft Road has also been reduced to one lane with traffic management in place. The incident was one of two last week in the Rutherglen and Cambuslang area and concerns have been raised that drivers continue to ignore drink driving laws.

The second incident was at 4.30am on Sunday morning and involved two teenagers who stole a car from Carmyle Avenue in Glasgow before driving it to Rutherglen.

Residents spotted the pair driving a Volkswagen Polo erratically and when police arrived on the scene a chase ensued.

They were eventually stopped at the Peking Palace on East Kilbride Road.

A 16-year-old from East Kilbride was charged with drink-driving, theft of a motor vehicle, failing to stop for police and driving without a valid driving licence.

His 17-year-old passenger, from Rutherglen, was charged with theft of a motor vehicle.

Both were released on an undertaking and will appear at court on a future date.

Their arrests come two weeks after two other drivers were allegedly caught drink driving in the Rutherglen and Cambuslang area within hours of each other.
