Delight as revamp plans move forward

- Jonathan Geddes

Plans to completely overhaul a Croftfoot church are gathering pace.

Croftoot United Free Church is in line for a new entrance, new halls and a cafe area.

Parishioners are optimistic that the proposals would help the Carmunock Road church become a hub for the local community.

Their plans moved forward recently when they secured enough funding to be able to hire a youth development worker.

Marion Milligan, clerk to the congregational board, is enthusiastic about what the rebuild could mean.

She said: “Our vision at Croftfoot United Free Church is to create a building that will provide the community with a welcoming and friendly place to meet, play, chill and chat.

“The steering group are meeting regularly with our architect and plans are well under way with the design of the new building, creating a café area and additional halls.

“It is hoped that our church, café and halls, in the hub of the community, will be a focal point for our community and provide a facility that would enhance the area.

“The café ministry will be developed to include dementia friendly clubs, lunch clubs for the elderly and carers, family and youth cafes.

“We have received funding to employ a family and youth development worker who will organise homework classes, family time and youth clubs for children of all ages.

“Our sanctuary will also be receiving a make over to match the new build. As a congregation we want to open our doors and to welcome folk in.”

“It is exciting times in 2017 as we work toward starting building in 2018.”

The church is currently waiting to find out the exact costs of the building revamp, although they could cost up to £400,000 in total.

The last time the church was redeveloped was in the early 1970s.

Croftfoot United Free Church is continuing to hold regular activities. Marion added: “We continue to hold our community café on the third Saturday of the month with a free bouncy castle and free kids area with Wii and games consoles and our next Big Community Fun Day will be on Saturday, September 2.”
