Rutherglen bowlers celebrate

Members Jennifer and John Burns jointly organised a fun day at the club on Sunday, May 28.

Teams were drawn randomly and the afternoon commenced with 14 ends of bowls. After refreshmen­ts the teams had to answer quiz questions and the scores from the bowls were added to the quiz scores. Congratula­tions went to winners Christine MacLeod and Roy Linder.

On June 3, Kirkhillwi­ll host their annual Invitation Fours competitio­n which is an all-day event. There will be 96 people in 24 teams competing for the honour as well as for the bowling prizes.

The club will also be hosting the first of its two annual 2-4-2 competitio­ns on June 10. It is a ‘mixed doubles’ competitio­n with a difference.

The lead players play two bowls followed by the second players playing four bowls. The lead players then bowl their two remaining bowls. The order is reversed every end.

The afternoon finishes with a fish and chip supper that always goes down well.

On Sunday, June 11, some members of the club will take part in an annual bowling trip to Rothesay. A coach leaves Kirkhill Bowling Club in the morning for the ferry to Rothesay from Wemyss Bay. Apart from the friendly game, the participan­ts have been known to enjoy the social aspects of the fun trip. The Gilliland League game on May 23 saw Cambuslang win at home against Rutherglen BC. They were due to play their final section game against Burnside after the Reformer went to print.

In the Cambuslang District Seniors Rinks League on May 24 their home tie against Mount Vernon was cancelled and reschedule­d for yesterday, Tuesday, when they won both games.

The club held their annual Alex Macfarlane Memorial tournament, which this year was won by a Cambuslang rink consisting of James McGall, Cliff MacMillan, Stewart Harbison and Alan Fellows.

Cambuslang would like to thank the sterling efforts of tournament organiser Glenda Montgomery, assisted by match secretary Alan Johnston, who expressed their gratitude to all the bowlers and friends who took part and gave so willingly on the day and not least to the club’s many generous sponsors.

This brings the total raised for charity by this annual event to £57,099.

A big thank you also went to all who donated prizes for the annual raffle draw and to Glenda Montgomery and the MacFarlane family. This Friday’s North Eastern League game is against Kirkhill.

In the R and D championsh­ip last Tuesday the singles and pairs won through to the semi-finals which were to be held at Rutherglen yesterday.

The senior fours won through to the next round of the GBA championsh­ipslast Wednesday and now play this afternoon (Wednesday), at Victoria Park.

In the Bowls Scotland district playoffs, the fours, senior singles and senior fours A and D teams won last Thursday. Tomorrow the fours are at Busby.

In the afternoon the senior singles and senior fours A are at Wellcroft and the senior fours D team is at Busby.

Last Saturday the 4-3- 2-1 competitio­n, sponsored by Specsavers, Rutherglen, was won by David Magill, David Orr, Alex McLean and Willie Gibb.

The runners- up were Ian Stewart, Ian Hamilton, Jim Lindsay and Jim Malloch.

Many thanks are due to Ann and Peter Beaton for attending the club to present the prizes. The Monday aggregate game was won by Eddie Thompson, Jim McIntyre and Gil Morgan.

This Saturday the club looks forward to hosting Milton of Campsie BC in their annual friendly match. The Clyde Refrigerat­ion Invitation Rinks will take place at Halfway this Saturday. It is a 9.30am for 10am start and 20 teams will take part.

On Sunday at 2pm Halfway are at home to Glengowan in the Top Five singles. On Saturday, June 10, Halfway will play Condorrat for the Fergus Trophy. The ladies are at home and the gents are away. Anyone wishing to play who has not put their name on the sheet before Monday night.

The road to Northfield began last week. In the gents Bowls Scotland qualifiers David Fergus made it through in the singles. Both pairs teams lost close games and the rinks were also defeated.

The triples got a bye. One of the senior fours teams lost with the other getting a bye. The senior singles reps also got a bye.

On the ladies side Taylor Gray made it through to the district semi-final in the junior singles. The pairs and senior fours bowed out but the triples made it through and the fours had a bye.

In the gents LBA ties Martin Wilson made it through to the district semis and will play Uddingston on Thursday night.

The fours made it to the same stage and will play Motherwell MW at Foxkey. The triples lost by a shot in their game.

In the RDBA ties, the Gilliland League team just need a point from their last game to make it through to the final. The pairs made it through to the semi-finals to be played at Rutherglen last night, Tuesday. Results to follow next week.

The triples, senior rinks and junior singles lost out at the quarter-final stage.

The seniors had one win and one loss against Blantyre and St Leonard’s on Monday morning. The top ten and knockout ties start next week. In the Rutherglen and District under 16s, young Arron McFadyen delivered a convincing victory in his quarter final game at Kirkhill cheered on by his grandfathe­r Billy Fox.

The JVP Fours final was finally played to a conclusion on Monday this week. The game was stopped last week due to torrential rain. Congratula­tions went to the team of Eddie Stewart, Jim Burns, Jack Connolly and skip Walter Matthews.

The Cambuslang and District senior teams both suffered defeat last week.

In the Gilliland League Section A, the team of Dougie Johnston, Scott Stevenson, Christophe­r Allan and super skip Marc Stirratt continued their run of good form to win the fourth game in a row. With one game to go they are in with a great chance of getting to the final.

In the Rutherglen and District pairs Cammy Taylor and Andrew Wilson brought home a victory once again showing that the bowling future of the club is in safe young hands.

Last week also saw some great results in the SBA competitio­ns. Jack Connolly and Andrew Wilson both won their respective junior singles ties. If their form continues they could potentiall­y meet in the final.

In the SBA singles, Jack Connolly again delivered a victory and this was quickly followed by a victory in the triples by a team consisting of Stevie Jackson, Cammy Taylor and skip Marc Stirratt.

The SBA over 55s fours team had a convincing victory against Templeton with a team of Eddie Nairn, Elby Elburn, David Lyburn and Boots McDonald.

In the SBA competitio­ns the pairs team of Chris Allan and Robert Whiteside suffered defeat. All members are asked to make sure that they have their ties arranged in good time.
