Event gets thumbs-up from delighted crowd

Cambuslang Summerfest lived up to its name on Saturday as the sun shone on a festival of music, fun and games.

Kicking off with a host of local talent, the stage made way for headline acts, Rihanna Reloaded and The Justin Bieber Experience.

People of all ages flocked to the main stage when the Rihanna tribute act belted out hits made famous by the Barbadian beauty.

Her set included top tracks such as Work, Umbrella, We Found Love and Only Girl.

And teen heart throb, the Justin Bieber Experience equally impressed, performing hits such as Sorry, Love Yourself, What Do you Mean and Baby.

The musicians performed against a backdrop of hustle and bustle as hundreds of people descended on the Main Street to visit the fairground rides, toddlers play area and stalls.

At just £2, the toddlers play area was particularly popular as little ones could play in an enclosed area with toys and activities.

And when a magician visited the play area, it was a highlight for many.

Irene Reid said: “I live just across from here and come every year.

“My granddaughters and grandson are with me.

“This area is £2 and they can come and go throughout the day and play. Summerfest is great for the kids especially. The kids love the magic show.

“Last year was the first time I saw it and I read in the Reformer it was returning.”

Nicola Newman was attending Summerfest for the first time having recently moved to the Newton area.

“I’ve really enjoyed it,” she said. “It has been a brilliant day.

“There’s lots to do and it’s good to have the tribute acts. The youngsters seem to enjoy that.

“I’ll definitely be back next year, my little one has had a ball.”

John Edgar, chairman of the Summerfest Committee, was delighted to see so many smiling faces on Saturday. He said: “We want to thank all of our sponsors and everyone who came along on the day to support us.

“We are already looking forward to next year and hope it will be an even better event.”

Clare Haughey, MSP for Rutherglen and Cambuslang, was one of many local dignitaries to attend Summerfest and congratulated locals on another wonderful event.,

She, said: “Today has been another success for the Summerfest organising committee.

“I think Cambuslang should be really proud of Summerfest and the people who put in so much time and effort over the years.

“They are to be commended. Well done to them all.”
