Drivers warned over gas works disruption

New pipes to be laid

- Douglas Dickie

Scottish Gas Network (SGN) will today start a major 30-week project in the Cambuslang area.

It will mean disruption for both motorists and residents living nearby.

But the group say the work, which is costing £425,000, is essential and will involve replacing old, metal gas mains with new plastic pipes which have a minimum lifespan of 80 years.

The project has been split into eight phases.

During phase one, which will take approximately eight weeks to complete, they will be working in Brownside Road.

Work will begin between the junctions with West Coats Road and Buchanan Drive and will then between the junctions with Chatelherault Avenue and Hawthorn Walk.

Temporary traffic lights will be in use throughout this phase.

Work will then move to Chatelherault Avenue for phase two of the project.

A road closure will be in place for approximately two weeks. However, SGN say local access will be maintained at all times. The remainder of the project will involve Richmond Drive, Buchanan Drive, Wellshot Drive, and Central Avenue.

During each phase, rolling road closures will be in place. However, local access for residents will be maintained at all times.

The final stage, on Glasgow Road and Cambuslang Main Street, will be completed in January and will take approximately one week to complete. This could involve temporary restrictions to footpaths and suspending some parking.

SGN project manager ,Graeme Walker, said: “We’ve worked closely with the local authorities in planning this work and we will be doing everything we can to minimise disruption during our essential project.

“We appreciate that roadworks can be frustrating. However, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years. This means once the work has been completed, homes and businesses in the area will enjoy the benefits of a continued safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.”
