Fakers target police

-

A fake Police Scotland page on Facebook has been reported to the online giant – by Police Scotland.

An account that impersonates the official Lanarkshire Police division page was set up on Sunday.

It caused a major online frenzy after it appeared to make an ‘official statement’ announcing the arrest of one person and declaring the innocence of two others.

And a statement on the ‘Police Scotland Lanarkshire 22113’ page then went on to advise: “If you have any further information please contact us on 101” and even signed off with “keeping people safe.”

Over 300 Facebookers responded to the statement.

When contacted, Police Scotland confirmed that the page had nothing to do with themselves or Lanarkshire Police Division.

In a statement, they said: “This page has been reported to Facebook as it is an impersonation of Police Scotland’s Lanarkshire Police Division page. The official Lanarkshire Police Division Facebook page is www.facebook.com/ LanarkshirePoliceDivision.”
