GIRLS ENJOY FOOTBALL FESTIVAL
Young pupils from primary schools in Rutherglen and Cambuslang joined hundreds of females to take part in a hugely successful girls’ football festival.
Organised by South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture (SLLC), the event saw its highest ever number of competitors representing 42 teams from 28 local primaries.
Held at Hamilton Palace Sports Grounds, the festival was targeted at P5-7 girls who play a series of five-a- side games across the tournament, with each player gaining a medal at the end.
Councillor David Watson, chair of SLLC, praised all involved in the day.
He said: “This year was our sixth annual girl’s football festival, and without doubt the biggest and best yet, with more than 40 teams involved.
“Other than displaying some fine footwork on the pitch, the schools clearly had a lot of fun – which is what it’s all about.
“Praise must also go to our fantastic Active School volunteers who gave up their time to coordinate pitches, referee matches and ensure all pupils got the most out of the experience.”
SLLC mascot Leaping Leo was on hand at the end of the event to present every player with a tournament medal, whilst the Active Schools volunteers gave out information on the forthcoming UEFA Women’s European Finals in which Scotland are competing over the summer.
Secondary school teams also got in on the action in the afternoon to contest The Summer Cup. Open to S1S4 girls, this year saw seven schools contest the five-a- side event.
After an exciting final match, first time entrants, St Andrews and St Brides beat former champions and fellow East Kilbride team, Duncanrig 2-0.
