Smith gets up and running at Glens

-

Gary Smith netted his first two goals for Glencairn to send the club through to the final of the annual James Glen Memorial Trophy for the third time in four years.

The ex-Motherwell striker, who signed with the club earlier this month, proved a menace for the Stranraer Under 20s defence as his dramatic late winner proved to be decisive.

After a first half which saw several Glencairn penalty claims waved away, there were positive early signs for The Glens in the second.

The deadlock was broken in the 48th minute as Ryan McArdle’s corner from the right was nodded home by Smith at the near post.

Despite The Glens looking the sharper of the two teams, the game changed in the 69th minute as Stranraer pulled themselves level via the penalty spot.

And just as the two dugouts were starting to think of who could take the spot kicks, the match was decided by a piece of brilliance in the 90th minute. Young fed Smith on the left edge of the penalty area and the striker turned his marker outside and then inside before drilling a decisive shot into the corner of the net.
